7 January 2022 (Buenos Aires Times) – An extreme heatwave is expected to hit Argentina, with experts warning temperatures may soar above 40°C in parts of the provinces of Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Santa Fe, Entre Rios and Santiago del Estero.
According to a specialist weather company, some of the aforementioned places could become the hottest places on the planet for a few hours.
According to an extended forecast issued by the National Meteorological Service (SMN), temperatures will rise over the next few days, comfortably exceeding 35°C in the central region of the country and some parts of the northwest.
In Buenos Aires City, the SMN forecast that it could reach 36°C next Tuesday and Wednesday (January 11 and 12), though higher temperatures are not ruled out.
In the city of Cordoba – one of the cities expected to suffer the most – a maximum temperature of 39°C is forecast for Monday, with extreme heat lasting until Wednesday, with minimum temperatures not expected to drop below 22°C. A similar situation is expected for the cities of Santa Fe and Paraná, according to the SMN, while in Santiago del Estero the temperature could reach 42°C.
Meanwhile, a forecast made by the Czech firm Windy, specialising in weather forecasting, is similar. On its interactive map, it anticipates that as of 2pm next Tuesday, the centre of Argentina will become the hottest region in the world for a few hours.

(Business Insider) – The corpses of four swimmers were discovered with horrific bites following a string of vicious piranha attacks in Paraguay, according to reports.
The first death took place last Sunday. A 22-year-old man vanished while swimming in the Paraguay River, according to MailOnline. The media outlet reported that he was discovered 45 minutes later with several parts of his body having been chewed on by the piranhas.
The second attack also took place on the Paraguay River, near the town of Puerto Rosario. It is believed that piranhas attacked a 49-year-old man who had drowned while having a heart attack, per the Paraguayan newspaper La Nación. He had severe bites on his face and feet from the piranhas, per the Evening Standard.
Two other people were also found dead with piranha bites on Sunday in the Tebicuary River — a tributary of the Paraguay River.
At least 20 others have been injured by piranhas in recent weeks, according to the Evening Standard. [more]
