3 July 2011 Los Alamos County reports that as of 8 a.m. Sunday, residents are allowed to return to their homes. State Road 4 remains closed west of Drive South and all access points to the Jemez Mountains and from Los Alamos County remain closed. The massive 121,000 acre Las Conchas fire continues to burn near Los Alamos. Close to 2,000 personnel are working around the clock to battle the fire, now 11 percent contained. Los Alamos Police Chief Wayne Torpy said in a news conference Sunday morning residents were informed of the evacuation lift at 7 a.m. […] Los Alamos Fire Chief Doug Tucker warns residents that they will see charred and smoldering landscapes in the hills and mountains surrounding the town. The fire along with the preventative back burning creates thick smoke visible from the Los Alamos townsite and at night, the fire appears to be closer than it actually is. […] Forest animals and wildlife are stressed from the fire and residents are advised these animals are roving around Los Alamos, looking for food and shelter.
