January 7, 2011 – 11:14AM Towns in northeastern NSW are bracing for major flooding on the weekend, with more heavy downpours forecast for the already sodden region. Northern rivers bulging from weeks of persistent rain are expected to start bursting their banks from Sunday as rain sweeps the region. The State Emergency Service (SES) warns that Lismore is expected to be particularly badly affected, with spokesman Phil Campbell saying between 100 and 200mm of rain is forecast. … Major flooding is also expected on the Brunswick River, west of Brunswick Heads. Overnight on Friday, SES volunteers gave assistance to about 20 properties in Ballina, as the Richmond River swelled to breaking point. … Meanwhile, flooding from Queensland continues to seep into northwestern NSW. Goodooga is expected to be cut off for up to six weeks once floodwaters reach the town. …
